Shanghai has highest minimum wage level in China

Shanghai has the highest minimum wage level in China, with 1,120 yuan ($164) per month, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS), the China Securities Journal reported Thursday.

Guangdong claims the crown for highest minimum wage per hour, which stands at 9.9 yuan per hour, said the report.

Yang Zhiming, vice-minister of the MOHRSS, said that as the economy is recovering, more than 10 provinces have raised their minimum wage standards this year, by an average of 17 percent.

Another 20 provinces are expected to follow suit this year, the MOHRSS said in April.

The last time much of China increased its minimum wage was two years ago, before the financial crisis.
