Hershey sees sweet spot amid slowdown

How do you ensure that Hershey's production in China maintains the same quality and safety as elsewhere?

Food quality and safety are top priorities for Hershey and we have long applied the most rigorous standards in the world for all of our global facilities.

We have a thorough training system in all of our facilities worldwide as well as comprehensive quality control and monitoring systems. Our quality experts are constantly analyzing our processes and procedures to ensure the highest quality and safety measures are being applied in our factories.

What is the most memorable moment or event in your career after working in the food as well as the consumer products industry for more than three decades?

I have lived and worked a large portion of my career outside of the United States-with tenures in the Middle East and Asia.

One of the most transformative was the time spent managing CPG brands in the Chinese market in the 1990s. I have a deep love for Chinese culture, art and literature and I am constantly learning and relearning the intricacies of this dynamic marketplace and the Chinese consumer.

What is your observation of entrepreneurship in China?

In my 25 years of working in the Chinese marketplace, I am very excited about the growth and opportunities I see in the business environment there.

The growth and acceleration of online retailing in China is leading the global marketplace.

And I believe the creativity and entrepreneurship in e-commerce is changing consumer shopping behavior in fundamental ways for manufacturers.

What role does chocolate play in your personal life?

Chocolate has been and will continue to be a part of my family traditions whether that is as a special treat to share with my children or grandchildren, or as a quick reward during a tough day. I particularly love a frozen Reese's peanut butter cup.
