Japanese lifestyle retailer MUJI plans to open a new global flagship store in Shanghai, combining retail, dining, and hospitality, as it expands its lifestyle offerings in one of the city's prime shopping districts.
MUJI signed an agreement with Huaihai Group on Nov 6, confirming that the new flagship store will be located at 887 Middle Huaihai Road.
The store is expected to span more than 8,000 square meters across six floors, according to Wu Shu, MUJI's chief marketing officer.
The development will also house Shanghai's first MUJI Hotel, which is planned to be larger than the brand's existing properties in Beijing and Shenzhen, Guangdong province, making it the company's largest hotel in China.
The project underscores MUJI's efforts to strengthen its position in the country's competitive retail market by integrating shopping, dining, and hospitality to attract consumers seeking broader lifestyle experiences.
MUJI operated 433 stores in China as of August.
Separately, MUJI China said on Nov 6 that Chinese consumers' personal information remained secure following a cybersecurity incident involving the company's official app in Japan.
The app, operated by MUJI's Japanese headquarters, was recently subject to unauthorized access, potentially exposing some users' personal information.
MUJI said an investigation confirmed that consumer information in China was unaffected by the incident. The company said it would continue to provide a safe and reliable service environment for Chinese consumers.
