Beijing slammed on Wednesday a British cybersecurity review portraying China as a threat, saying that the United Kingdom is rehashing hacking allegations as a pretext to curb China's artificial intelligence development.

The annual review, released on Tuesday by the UK's National Cyber Security Centre, which is part of the Government Communications Headquarters, said that by 2028, the UK will highly likely face an increase in scale and speed of sophisticated AI-powered cyberattacks from countries including China.

China expresses grave concern over the wanton speculative accusation brought by the UK despite the absence of evidence, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a daily news conference.

The UK has long been politicizing cybersecurity issues, and the latest wrong practice is not conducive to the mutual trust between the two countries and undermines the UK's credibility in international cooperation on AI safety governance, Mao said.

Cybersecurity risks arising from AI are a common challenge facing all countries, which should be addressed through joint efforts under the new international rules formed by the United Nations, she said.
