Hainan is betting on green energy as it builds a high-standard free trade port, experts said Monday at the opening of the 7th New Power System International Forum and 22nd CSG International Science and Technology Forum in Haikou.

The five-day event, hosted by China Southern Power Grid, gathered global energy experts to discuss technological innovation, policy mechanisms, market models, and industrial ecosystems for new-type power systems.

Feng Fei, Party secretary of Hainan province, said in his opening address that Hainan's clean energy installed capacity now accounts for 88 percent of the total, while clean generation exceeds 73 percent. The province's Linglong One, a land-based commercial small modular reactor, became the world's first to pass a safety review by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Hainan's clean energy island new-type power system was listed among China's landmark major application scenarios. Hainan also completed its first leap from 220-kilovolt to 500-kilovolt voltage levels, deploying China's first digital 500-kV grid, he added.

Feng called for building a resilient grid that ensures green power can be delivered, used, and supplied reliably, and for advancing source-grid-load-storage integration, new energy storage, vehicle-to-grid applications, and regional power markets.

China Southern Power Grid unveiled a plan to link six types of infrastructure (power, water, computing, telecom, underground pipes, and logistics), along with a 10-million-kilowatt offshore wind base featuring a ±500-kV integrated sea-land flexible DC transmission system, a next-generation AI platform, standardized grid-connection control, a distribution network planning agent, a power solver, and an energy service assistant.

The forum also unveiled the Committee on Energy of the World Data Organization, aimed at promoting cross-border energy data cooperation and standards.

Li Qizhao, deputy general manager of China Huaneng Group, proposed developing a unified national power market, improving inter-provincial and inter-regional trading mechanisms, and establishing capacity prices and ancillary service mechanisms. He also urged vigorous development of zero-carbon parks, computing-power coordination, and virtual power plants.

Hainan is accelerating the Hainan-Guangdong flexible power interconnection project, with authorities pledging high-quality supply to support free trade port construction.
