China reiterated on Tuesday that military action would not help resolve disputes in the Middle East and the Gulf region, warning that further escalation would serve no party's interests.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular news briefing when asked about recent visits by Iranian and Saudi officials to China, and whether Beijing was concerned about the possibility of renewed US or Israeli attacks on Iran following the US midterm elections.

Mao said Foreign Minister Wang Yi had already elaborated in detail China's position regarding the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region.

China has consistently maintained that military means are not conducive to resolving problems and would only heighten tensions and escalate the situation, which would not serve the interests of any party, she said.

Mao expressed hope that the parties concerned would remain committed to peaceful solutions, resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiations, and work toward restoring peace and tranquility in the Middle East and the Gulf region at an early date.
