German President Steinmeier explores Anhui's history, development, and ecology
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recently spent two days in Anhui province before moving on to Beijing on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Buedenbender, visited the former residence of Li Hongzhang, a political heavyweight and Hefei native of the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
He then visited Luogang Park, which was built on the site of a former airport. There he viewed a water management system designed to provide flood protection and improve urban climate.
He ended the first day with a stop at Volkswagen China Technology Company, the largest R&D center of Volkswagen outside Germany.
The second day began in Hongcun, a UNESCO World Heritage village in Huangshan, to experience the local landscape and culture. Steinmeier then hiked Huangshan Mountain, which was recognized as a UNESCO Cultural and Natural Heritage Site in 1990. With German and Chinese cultural figures, they discussed how nature and humanity are depicted in Eastern and Western art and philosophy.
