Black garbage bags became elegant evening gowns and discarded newspapers were transformed into traditional Chinese dresses as students showcased their creativity at an eco-friendly fashion competition on Oct 17 in Wuhan, Hubei province.

The 11th Eco-friendly Fashion Design Competition at South-Central Minzu University brought together 31 student teams, each presenting an outfit made entirely from discarded materials.

With no conventional fabrics provided, students turned takeaway packaging, bubble wrap, cardboard boxes, plastic bottle caps, and even dried leaves into eye-catching fashion pieces.

One team created a Victorian-inspired fishtail gown from layers of black garbage bags, decorating its neckline with lace salvaged from an old curtain and using cardboard boxes for structural support.

Another design combined discarded insulation film, fishing nets, and bottle caps to highlight marine pollution. "When ocean waste can be woven into a beautiful gown, the dress itself becomes a warning from the sea," said student designer Qiu Xiaohan.

The first-prize winner, created by a team led by Ge Yiming, blended sustainability with traditional Chinese aesthetics. The team fashioned a modern qipao from old newspapers, aluminum foil, and candy wrappers, incorporating golden patterns inspired by Chinese paper-cutting. Osmanthus flowers collected on campus were also used to give the dress a delicate fragrance.

Organized by the university's College of Resources and Environment, the competition encouraged students to explore creative ways of reusing waste. The event demonstrated how imagination and craftsmanship can transform everyday waste into wearable art, bringing environmental awareness to life through fashion, organizers said.
