Shanghai's Changning district capitalizes on 'cool neighborhood' designation
Changning district in Shanghai is using its recent recognition on Time Out's 2026 list of the world's "coolest neighborhoods" to promote consumption during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, combining shopping, culture, tourism, and other activities to attract residents and visitors.
Data from the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory of Fudan Development Institute showed that, from Sept 25 to 26, the four major commercial areas in Changning recorded combined sales of 204 million yuan ($30.4 million), up 47.55 percent year-on-year. Consumption in the Zhongshan Park and Hongqiao-Tianshan commercial areas increased 76.05 percent and 47.24 percent, respectively.
Changning's "Youxiang coupons" generated 12 yuan in consumption for every yuan of government subsidy during the holiday, nearly twice the leverage ratio of previous coupon campaigns. The campaign requires no advance reservations and offers six levels of discounts through Sept 29.
On Sept 25, the district kicked off the autumn session of the Premier Hongqiao Carnival, featuring one major performance, 10 key activities, and 118 cultural and tourism activities, attracting visitors from home and abroad.
"This is my 13th year celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival in Shanghai," Ignatiev Alexei, a Russian blogger who has lived in Shanghai for many years, said. "It was really fun. If foreign visitors come to Shanghai, I would let them try mooncakes, let them experience it, and tell them what mooncakes mean in Chinese culture."
Gibson Quinn Darby, an Australian sophomore at Shanghai University of Engineering Science, said Changning's colorful streets, food, and lively atmosphere made the district "cool".
"The 'coolness' of a neighborhood comes from its lifestyle and cultural heritage, which can last much longer than fashion trends," he said. "Changning has this lasting cultural character and an international atmosphere similar to Melbourne. I feel comfortable here, where I often see foreigners working, living, and raising families."
Liu Ping, head of district, said: "In the next step, Changning will accelerate its efforts to create a destination for high-quality living and attract more visitors from China and around the world to Shanghai and to Changning."
Changning ranked No 26, the highest among Chinese neighborhoods on this year's "coolest neighborhoods of the world" list released by Time Out, a global city life magazine. Its mix of trendy urban life and everyday neighborhood culture has drawn international attention.
