Cargill, a US-based agricultural giant that has invested more than $2.57 billion in China over the past half-century, plans to invest further in the fast-growing market in the years ahead, said its senior executives.

Chinese consumer demand for food innovation has not only prompted the company to respond with faster, higher-quality innovation, but also strengthened its research and development capabilities in China, helping drive the company's global growth, they added.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Cargill's innovation center in Shanghai serves as an important channel connecting global professional capabilities with the needs of China and the Asia-Pacific market, said Steven Montgomery, vice-president of Cargill core R&D.

"From a growth perspective, innovation creates value when we create growth value for our customers. By helping our customers solve formulation challenges, improve product performance and shorten the path from concept to commercialization, the Cargill Shanghai innovation center is critical to supporting customer growth and our long-term growth in China and the Asia-Pacific region," Montgomery added.

Zhang Yuchu, vice-president of R&D innovation with Cargill Food Asia-Pacific, said, "China has long been one of the most important markets for Cargill, not only because of its large population, but also because Chinese consumers have high and rapidly evolving demands for food innovation."

Zhang said that many years ago, Cargill established an approach in China to bring together its core technologies and capabilities to support the needs of customers and consumers in the Chinese market.

"China is also one of the most dynamic markets in the world. Its vast geography is home to diverse food cultures and flavors, while consumers in different regions have different needs, including in terms of health. Cargill has therefore continued to regard China as a key market, providing support and investing in the country."

"Cargill has built up extensive technical expertise. Through the Shanghai Innovation Center and its R&D facilities across China, we can help translate our global expertise into solutions tailored to the local market," said Zhang Yutao, R&D director of Cargill Foods North Asia.

"In 2024, we carried out a major upgrade of the Cargill Shanghai innovation center, investing more than 30 million yuan ($4.48 million) in a range of specialized equipment and facilities. The center's total area was expanded to more than 3,000 square meters, helping accelerate the product development process," he said.

Cargill also has an R&D center — Cargill Pinghu flavor-syrup innovation and production facility — to focus on coffee and tea beverages. The rapid growth of coffee and tea beverages in China, combined with such local innovation hubs, can help Cargill better integrate its global capabilities with local insights and consumer needs, Zhang Yutao said.

In addition to launching the relocation of its Nantong grain and oil plant in 2025, with a planned total investment of about $500 million, Cargill formally began an expansion project of its Beijing plant in January 2026, involving a total investment of more than 45 million yuan.

"These projects demonstrate our strong confidence in the Chinese market, where rising consumer spending and demand for higher-quality products present important opportunities for our business," Zhang Yuchu said.
