Geological survey held in Huangyan Island waters

China conducted a multidisciplinary geological survey in the waters of Huangyan Island to gain a comprehensive understanding of the area's geological features and ecological environment, the Ministry of Natural Resources said on Wednesday.

The survey, conducted by the Chinese research vessel Haiyang Dizhi 10, operated by the ministry's China Geological Survey, ran from Aug 11 to Sept 8.

It employed a range of methods, including single-channel seismic surveys, gravity and magnetic measurements, underway current observations, conductivity, temperature and depth profiling, and geological sampling. The work generated baseline data on ocean hydrology, sedimentary strata and geophysical fields, as well as samples of seawater, marine organisms, marine sediments and seabed rocks.

The ministry said the survey provides reliable firsthand data for understanding the area's geological and geophysical characteristics and ecological conditions. It will support research into seabed sediment types, stratigraphic structures, potential geohazards, tectonic evolution and marine environmental quality.

The survey also provides a scientific basis for the comprehensive management of the waters surrounding Huangyan Island, the ministry said.

Huangyan Island is an atoll in the Zhongsha Islands in the South China Sea, with rocks exposed above the water at high tide, and is an inherent part of China's territory.

Known for its well-developed coral reef ecosystem, the island was designated a national nature reserve in September 2025. Specialized management rules for the reserve took effect on Aug 1, prohibiting unauthorized fishing, mining and coral harvesting.
