Trip.com lists $760,000 Virgin Galactic space tour package
Chinese travel portal Trip.com Group has recently listed a space tour package priced at 5.1 million yuan ($760,000) per ticket, triggering heated discussion online.
The product is offered by the group's sub-brand HHtravel, which focuses on luxury and customized tours, in cooperation with Virgin Galactic, a British-United States spaceflight company headquartered in the US.
According to the group's website, the tour lasts six days, and travelers will receive systematic training before beginning their space tour in Las Cruces, New Mexico, US. The suborbital flight is scheduled for the fifth day of the six-day trip, and passengers will board Virgin Galactic's air-launched spacecraft for a 90-minute suborbital spaceflight.
The product includes preflight training, transportation and accommodation during the training in the US, a spacesuit, and souvenirs such as badges and videos for the spaceflight experience.
People purchasing the product, however, must pay separately for flights to and from the US, visas to the country and personal insurance for the space tour.
Neither the group nor HHtravel has responded to China Daily's requests for comment so far, while the product has sparked heated discussion online. Some netizens commented that the product is a gimmick at such a sky-high price, while others expressed concerns about the safety of the trip.
