China conducted a multidisciplinary geological survey in the waters of Huangyan Island to gain a comprehensive understanding of the basic geological features and ecological environment in China's jurisdictional waters, the Ministry of Natural Resources said on Wednesday.

The survey, carried out by the Chinese research vessel Haiyang Dizhi 10 from the ministry's China Geological Survey, took place from Aug 11 to Sept 8.

The survey integrated multiple disciplines and employed a variety of methods, such as single-channel seismic, gravity and magnetic surveys, underway current observations, and geological sampling. These techniques were used to gather baseline data on ocean hydrology, sedimentary strata and geophysical fields, along with samples of seawater, marine organisms, marine sediments and seabed rocks.

The ministry said the work provides reliable firsthand data to enhance understanding of the geological and geophysical characteristics and ecological status of the area. It supports research on seabed sediment types, stratigraphic structure, potential geohazards, tectonic evolution and marine environmental quality assessment, the ministry said.

Additionally, it offers a scientific foundation for the comprehensive management of waters surrounding Huangyan Island, the ministry added.
