China activates flood emergency response for Hainan

China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters activated a Level IV emergency response for flood control in Hainan province at 7 pm on Saturday, as a tropical depression over the South China Sea is forecast to bring heavy rainfall to the island.

From Sunday to Tuesday, parts of Hainan Island are expected to see heavy to torrential rain, with extremely heavy rainfall possible in some areas, according to meteorological authorities.

The rainfall is expected to bring high risks of mountain torrents, geological disasters, flooding in small and medium-sized rivers and urban waterlogging.

China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe.
