Dyson expands AI-powered product lineup
Dyson Ltd is expanding its lineup of artificial intelligence-powered products as China's increasingly sophisticated consumers and fast-moving home appliance market raise expectations for innovation.
The global technology company on Sept 3 unveiled seven new products built around what Chief Engineer Jake Dyson described as a shift from "purely mechanical devices to intelligent machines" capable of sensing their surroundings and responding in real time.
The new lineup includes the HushJet air purifier range, the Nurovi robot vacuum range, the W1 PencilWash wet floor cleaner and the CameraJet toothbrush, which the company said is the first toothbrush equipped with a camera to help users identify plaque between their teeth.
"Now we have shifted from purely mechanical devices to intelligent machines that can see, think and respond," Jake Dyson said. "We're using artificial intelligence, vision systems and machine learning to allow the machines to understand the environment they are operating in."
The product push comes as China has emerged as one of Dyson's most demanding markets, where tech-savvy consumers and rapidly advancing domestic competitors are raising the bar for product performance.
"We see the Chinese consumer is highly interested in technology. It's world-leading," said Will Kerr, Dyson's vice president for categories. "Chinese companies are also advancing extremely quickly, and that pushes us to move faster, innovate faster and deliver better products."
The company works closely with its China team to feed consumer insights back to engineers at its headquarters, while nearly every new product undergoes trials in Chinese households before launch. The W1 PencilWash wet floor cleaner, for example, incorporates design changes based on feedback from Chinese users, who wanted not only cleaner floors but also machines that are easier to disassemble and wash after use.
"We found expectations around cleanliness are extremely high in China," Kerr said. "Making every component easy to remove and clean became an important part of the engineering process."
China's home environment has also shaped Dyson's latest air purification products. Recognizing that many households require whole-home purification and that air quality remains an important concern in many cities, the company redesigned its HushJet air purifier to deliver greater airflow while operating more quietly than previous generations.
China is also playing a growing role in Dyson's product development and supply chain. The company is expanding collaboration with Chinese suppliers and technology partners to speed up innovation and shorten development cycles, according to Kerr.
