Mainland expresses thanks to various sectors in Taiwan for concern over mudslide disaster

BEIJING -- A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday expressed appreciation to people from various sectors in Taiwan for their concern after a devastating mudslide struck Gyirong border Port in Southwest Xizang autonomous region.

"No one from Taiwan was reported missing, hurt or dead from the disaster," said Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

"We will keep following the situation and provide necessary assistance in a timely manner to Taiwan compatriots in the stricken area," she said.

An ice-rock avalanche in Nepal triggered a deadly mudslide that hit Gyirong Port on the Chinese side on Aug 26. According to the latest update of the Xizang regional government, the disaster has claimed 16 lives and left 546 others missing at the border port.

In response to a media question, Zhang expressed concern over the disruption to normal life and work caused by continuous heavy rain in southern Taiwan and willingness to provide help.
