Tech expertise enhances regional energy projects
China is rapidly stepping up its renewable energy cooperation with Kyrgyzstan, leveraging its world-class technological expertise to help the Central Asian nation tap its abundant natural resources.
Cooperation in recent years has expanded from simple engineering contracting to the integration of technology, capital, equipment and standards. Along with capital has come new energy equipment, such as photovoltaic modules and project management expertise.
China's overseas expansion of high-end manufacturing and green supply chains has been facilitated by compliance with international standards and regional certifications.
Relying on China's advantages in renewable technology manufacturing and large-scale project development, the cooperation is helping Kyrgyzstan build a more resilient, independent and low-carbon modern energy system, said Lin Boqiang, head of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University.
A landmark example is Kyrgyzstan's first-ever solar power plant, which was inaugurated last year. The 100-megawatt facility, built with Chinese investment, is anticipated to generate 210 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually.
As one of the largest foreign investments in the nation's renewable energy sector to date, the facility plays a crucial role in bridging Kyrgyzstan's winter power deficits, reducing the country's reliance on costly imported electricity, and bolstering national energy independence.
The clean power offsets fossil fuel use, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by over 157,000 metric tons a year.
The momentum of this bilateral cooperation has carried robustly into 2026, said Lin.
Large-scale solar and wind plants, either wholly owned or co-invested by Chinese enterprises, are slated to break ground, with several Chinese-backed small-scale hydropower stations preparing to connect to the grid this year, he said.
On a grander scale, Chinese infrastructure giants like State-owned Power Construction Corporation of China are in advanced discussions with Kyrgyz authorities to invest in a hydropower project, an endeavor expected to have a massive capacity.
This localization in Kyrgyzstan mirrors the trend across the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Wang Hongzhi, head of China's National Energy Administration, has proposed the deepening of pragmatic exchanges, expanding clean energy collaboration, and enhancing regional energy governance, ultimately creating a secure, green and shared development network across the region.
During China's 2024-25 SCO presidency, Chinese companies signed, began or completed more than 160 power and renewable energy projects and over 60 oil and gas projects in SCO countries, worth some 380 billion yuan ($52.5 billion) in total, according to the administration.
Li Sheng, director-general of the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute, said a recent increase in clean energy partnerships between China and its SCO counterparts has substantially boosted regional renewable capacity, serving as a key catalyst for global decarbonization efforts.
The complementarity between the region's rich natural resource endowments and China's comprehensive industrial chain — from design to construction — is facilitating rapid technology transfer and playing an indispensable role in global climate initiatives, he said.
SCO countries boast rich renewable energy potential, which aligns with China's advanced technologies, robust engineering capacity and comprehensive industrial supply chain. This strong complementarity bridges regional resource wealth with market demand, driving mutual growth and accelerating sustainable development across the bloc, he said.
Li added that the synergy between China's technical prowess and the region's vast green potential signals a bright and expanding horizon for future clean energy collaboration among SCO nations.
