China activates Level-IV flood control emergency response in Fujian

China's Ministry of Water Resources activated a Level-IV flood control emergency response — the lowest in the country's four-tier disaster-relief system — for Fujian at 5 pm on Monday. This action comes as heavy rainfall from Typhoon Gaenari is expected to raise water levels in major rivers across the coastal province from Monday to Tuesday.

Forecasts indicate significant water level rises in the Minjiang, Jiulong, and Tingjiang rivers, as well as other coastal rivers in Fujian. Some small and medium-sized rivers in areas affected by the downpours may experience floods above warning levels, according to a ministry media release.

Following its emergency response protocols for flood and drought disaster prevention, the ministry has dispatched a working group to the front lines for typhoon, rainstorm, and flood prevention. This group will guide and urge local water resources authorities and river basin management agencies to closely monitor rainfall and water conditions, strengthen emergency duty shifts and consultation mechanisms, and enhance monitoring, forecasting, and early warning systems.

Fujian has been preparing for the impact of the typhoon-related rainfall, with water conservancy departments at various levels closely monitoring evolving weather and hydrological conditions.
