Designing 12306 platform's ticket to success

Engineer's journey mirrors China's transformation in railway travel

For many older Chinese, the task of buying a train ticket before a major holiday used to involve some serious planning and patience.

Memories of spending cold nights at a railway station with a small stool and a quilt, waiting for the ticket windows to open ahead of the Spring Festival holiday travel rush, still linger.

But for the younger generations accustomed to arranging a journey with a few taps on a mobile phone, such scenes belong to another era.

One of the key architects of that transformation is Shan Xinghua, 52, chief engineer of the China Railway 12306 Technology Center and a chief researcher at China Academy of Railway Sciences Group.

On July 1, as the country marked the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, Shan was awarded the July 1 Medal, the Party's highest honor for exemplary members.

The recognition honors a career that has run parallel to China's transformation from paper tickets and long lines at stations to a vast railway network that is supported by an integrated digital ticketing platform.

A lifelong pursuit

Shan's connection with railway tickets began long before she became an engineer.

At 17, she stood in line for an entire day and night to buy her first train ticket. She was leaving her remote mountain village in Wuyuan, Jiangxi province, after becoming the first person admitted to university in her village. Her tuition had been pooled by relatives and neighbors.

"At the time, I could never have imagined that a small train ticket would lead me to the pursuit of a lifetime," Shan said.

While pursuing postgraduate studies in the early 1990s, Shan was one of 28 young researchers selected from universities nationwide to join a national railway ticketing project at China Academy of Railway Sciences Group.

In late 1996, she was assigned to install and test an early version of the computerized system at Jiujiang Railway Station in Jiangxi. The task involved bringing together train schedules, fares, carriage formations and seat plans, with little room for error.

"When I pressed enter and saw the ticket database come online, I couldn't help cheering," Shan said. "For the first time, I felt that my work could really make a difference."

Rebuilding for demand

As China's economy expanded, its railway network grew and more people traveled, the technical challenge became far greater than processing ordinary online purchases.

Zhang Xuesong, deputy general manager of CARS, said the platform must serve conventional and high-speed trains with different stopping patterns, fares and seat arrangements.

Seat availability also changes dynamically across different sections of a journey. During peak travel periods, the system must continually recalculate inventories while large numbers of passengers simultaneously submit requests.

"Every successful ticket purchase completed within seconds and every smoothly fulfilled wait-list request is 12306 quietly safeguarding a passenger's journey," Zhang said.

The pressure grew during the 2012 Spring Festival travel rush, when unexpectedly heavy traffic overwhelmed the newly launched 12306 website. The platform slowed sharply, drawing widespread complaints from passengers trying to secure tickets for family reunions.

For more than 50 consecutive days, Shan and her colleagues monitored the platform during ticket-selling hours and carried out upgrades and tests after sales closed at night. The crisis prompted the team to reconsider the system's underlying architecture rather than simply adding more computing equipment.

Wang Mingzhe, director of the Electronics Institute of CARS, has worked with Shan since 2001. He recalled how, amid doubts on whether the problems could be overcome, Shan repeatedly brought the discussion back to passengers.

"Technology has warmth," Wang recalled her saying. "Think about the passengers who are anxious to buy tickets. We cannot give up."

Shan studied how passengers stood in lines at station ticket windows and how transactions were divided among ticket clerks. Drawing inspiration from that process, her team developed an asynchronous transaction line that turned huge volumes of unordered purchase requests into a controlled flow.

"Behind every apparent flash of inspiration were decades of working on the front line, studying the system and confronting problems directly," Wang said.

The growth of 12306 has accompanied the wider transformation of China's railway system, including the rapid expansion of a high-speed rail network that has drastically reduced travel times and strengthened city links.

The physical network brought faster trains and new stations. Shan and her colleagues were responsible for helping to ensure that the digital infrastructure behind it could keep pace with increasingly large and complex passenger flows.

According to China State Railway Group, the national railway operator, 12306 now has more than 700 million registered users and the capacity to sell more than 20 million tickets a day.

About 85 percent of railway tickets are routinely sold online, with the proportion reaching as high as 90 percent on some days.

The platform's development has not been measured solely by transaction capacity.

In recent years, 12306 has introduced mobile payments, online seat and berth selection, meal ordering, quiet carriages, waiting-list purchases, high-speed rail pet transport and senior-friendly services.

It has also launched travel passes that allow passengers to make multiple journeys within a specified period.

Shan's team has also contributed to ticketing systems for the China-Laos Railway and the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, adapting them to local travel habits, identification documents, currencies and payment methods rather than simply reproducing the Chinese platform.

Team behind the engine

Although Shan is widely regarded as a leading figure behind 12306, she has consistently stressed that the platform's success rests on the work of a much larger team.

Wu Zheng, a Peking University student and railway enthusiast, met Shan during a visit to the 12306 monitoring center.

He said he was struck not only by the scale of the platform, but also by Shan's emphasis on the young engineers behind it and on designing services centered around passenger needs.

The team has more than 300 members, with an average age under 34. For Wu, features such as online verification of student discounts and quiet carriages showed that innovation is not only about speed or efficiency, but also making travel easier for different types of passengers.

Shan's description of fairness and care as part of the system's "underlying code" stayed with him, Wu said, because it humanized an otherwise technical term.

From overnight station lines to mobile purchases and identity-card boarding, the changes Shan has witnessed reflect not only the development of a ticketing platform but also a broader transformation in China's transport system.

The country's railway development is visible in its trains, tracks, bridges and stations.

Less visible are engineers such as Shan and the digital systems that allow millions of people to use the network each day.

Looking back, Shan compares her life to a train that departed from a small village in Jiangxi and continued toward an ever-wider world.

"The greatest happiness for me," she said, "is helping more people board the train of the times and set out toward happiness."
