China-India border trade through Nathu La Pass resumes

Border trade between China and India through Nathu La Pass resumed on Saturday, according to authorities in Dromo county of Shigatse, Xizang autonomous region.

A reopening ceremony was held at the pass, attended by officials from the county's border trade management committee, customs and border inspection authorities, and representatives of a border trade association, according to the county's integrated media center.

Gong Shijun, head of Dromo county, said the area had historically served as a major route along the southern branch of the Silk Road and as a gateway for trade between China and South Asian countries.

He said the reopening marked renewed prospects for border trade and called on local departments to work together to support economic growth, employment, and livelihoods, as well as development and stability in the border area, the media center's report said.

Nathu La Pass lies on the border between China and India, 52 kilometers from the Dromo county seat and 54 km from Gangtok, the capital of the Indian state of Sikkim, according to the WeChat account operated by Shigatse's cyberspace affairs office.
