Amazon Q2 net sales rise 20%, net income surges
SAN FRANCISCO - Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday reported net sales of $200.6 billion for the second quarter, up 20 percent year-over-year.
The Seattle-based e-commerce and cloud-computing giant posted quarterly net income of $62.6 billion, or $5.75 per diluted share, compared with $18.2 billion, or $1.68 per diluted share, in the same period last year.
Amazon said its second-quarter net income included $53.4 billion in non-operating pre-tax other income, primarily from its investments in artificial intelligence company Anthropic.
The company's operating income increased 43 percent year-over-year to $27.5 billion from $19.2 billion.
Amazon's North America segment sales increased 16 percent to $116.2 billion, while its international segment sales rose 15 percent to $42.2 billion.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) segment sales surged 37 percent year-over-year to $42.2 billion, marking its fastest growth in 18 quarters. The segment's operating income increased to $16.6 billion from $10.2 billion a year earlier.
"AWS is booming, growing 36.7 percent year-over-year in Q2 -- our fastest growth in 18 quarters," said Andy Jassy, president and CEO of Amazon.
Jassy said the annualized revenue run rates of Amazon's AI and chip businesses had each exceeded $25 billion. The company's advertising business recorded year-over-year growth of 26 percent.
Amazon's operating cash flow increased 33 percent to $161.4 billion for the trailing 12 months. Free cash flow, however, declined to an outflow of $7.6 billion, primarily reflecting increased investment in artificial intelligence.
The company expects third-quarter net sales of between 197 billion and $202 billion, representing year-over-year growth of between 9 percent and 12 percent. Operating income is expected to range from $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion.
