Some villagers said they had gone nearly three days without a proper meal. Zhou later continued preparing noodles and fried rice noodles for rescue teams.

"Many veterans and other local residents are doing what they can to help," Zhou said. "I'm grateful that I can contribute."

In Zhenlong township, landslides damaged roads and disrupted power and communications, preventing supply vehicles from reaching some mountain villages. A 60-year-old motorcyclist surnamed Lin, from Jilin province, joined other riders in carrying emergency supplies along muddy and damaged mountain roads.
