Railway technology pioneer inspires students
Shan Xinghua, a leading railway technology expert who transformed China's 12306 ticketing system into one of the world's busiest real-time online platforms, shared her story of innovation and public service with students and faculty at Xi'an Jiaotong University in Shaanxi province on Monday.
As the chief engineer of the 12306 technology center under the China Academy of Railway Sciences, Shan has dedicated about 30 years to the research and development of China's railway ticketing system. Her work has supported the operation of the country's vast passenger rail network and improved travel services for hundreds of millions of passengers.
In December 2024, Shan was honored with the national title of "Role Model of the Times", recognizing her exemplary contributions to advancing China's transport sector through technological innovation.
At the university, members of the reporting group shared stories about Shan's dedication to railway research, her role in overcoming key technical challenges, and her commitment to meeting passengers' evolving travel needs.
Shan also delivered a speech titled "I am a Happy Striver", in which she reflected on her career in railway ticketing technology and the fulfillment she has found in scientific research and public service.
Students and faculty members remarked that her story offered inspiration for young people pursuing careers in science, engineering, and transportation, encouraging them to contribute to the country's modernization through innovation and dedication.
The event was part of a national tour of report meetings highlighting Shan's achievements. Since receiving the "Role Model of the Times" title in December 2024, similar meetings have been held at universities and railway institutions across China.
