Guizhou delivery rider honored for river rescue sacrifice
A delivery rider who died after entering a river to save a father and son in Kaili city, Guizhou province, has been honored for his act of bravery, along with three others involved in the rescue.
The municipal government recognized Jin Xiaowu and his three companions on June 12 for their heroic actions during the river rescue, Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.
Officials said a child fell into the river while playing along the bank on May 27. The child's father jumped in to help, but both were quickly caught in strong currents.
Jin and several bystanders entered the water and worked together to push the pair toward shallower ground. Jin later became exhausted and was swept away by the current.
His body was recovered at 9:23 pm that evening.
Family members and villagers described Jin as frugal, responsible, and devoted to his family. He came from a modest household, where he had taken on the role of supporting his father, who was in poor health.
Notes found on his phone showed plans for 2026, including saving 20,000 yuan (about $2,952) and buying a minivan for his father. Days before the incident, he had used his savings to buy a new phone for his mother, according to local reports.
On the day of his burial, village officials, local authorities, and residents lined the road to pay tribute, laying flowers and wreaths in his honor.
Local organizations dedicated to recognizing acts of bravery have visited his family to offer condolences. Authorities also provide follow-up support for those involved in the rescue.
