"No matter how you trace these surnames in Taiwan, their roots all lead back to the Chinese mainland," said Li Gaoxiong, a Taiwan compatriot living in Fujian. He explained that his surname, Li, traces back to Quanzhou in Fujian province, and that his given name, Gaoxiong, is named after the city Kaohsiung in Taiwan.
