Xi's speech at Central Urban Work Conference published
A speech delivered by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, at the Central Urban Work Conference, was published on Friday.
The speech by Xi, who is also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, was published in this year's second issue of the Qiushi Journal, a flagship magazine of the CPC Central Committee.
The speech notes that since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, China has achieved historic progress in urban development. However, some new challenges have emerged. The speech stipulates the overall requirements for China's urban development, calling for the blazing of a new path for urban modernization with Chinese characteristics.
Steps discussed to stimulate consumption
Premier Li Qiang chaired an executive meeting of the State Council, China's Cabinet, on Friday to hear a report on the progress of special initiatives to increase consumption and discuss measures to further boost retail spending.
The meeting noted the positive results of the initiatives launched nationwide last year, and underlined the need to continue to implement them to effectively enhance the intrinsic motive for consumer spending and strengthen the fundamental role of consumption in driving economic growth.
