Six people have been punished or formally warned by police after disrupting a wedding procession and demanding cigarettes in Xianghe county, Langfang, Hebei province, local authorities said on Tuesday. Officials also dismissed online rumours claiming that 50 cartons of cigarettes were involved.

According to the county government statement, the incident took place on Nov 5, when a group of six stopped a wedding car under the pretext of offering congratulations and demanded nine cartons of cigarettes, without specifying a brand.

An investigation found that the claim of 50 cartons originated from a driver in the wedding convoy, who spread the misinformation.

After about 20 minutes of discussion, the newlyweds continued their journey in another car, while the six individuals left without receiving any cigarettes.

Authorities said the county would crack down on such improper practices and encouraged the public to report similar incidents.
