Currying favor with US will only consume Taiwan completely: mainland
BEIJING -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday said that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan are currying favor with the United States at the expense of the well-being of the people of Taiwan and the island's economic prospects -- a choice that will only consume Taiwan completely in the end.
Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks regarding Taiwan's intention to purchase over $10 billion worth of farm produce from the US within a period of four years.
He noted that as the facts continue to come out, they have led the people of Taiwan to realize that the US always puts its own interests first.
In the face of the United States' economic bullying, the DPP authorities have chosen to compromise and pander to the US, allowing Washington to call the shots, Chen said.
It is widely understood that large-scale purchases of US agricultural products will inevitably impact Taiwan's own market, driving down prices and sales while hurting the incomes of locals engaged in farming and fishing, he said.
By "selling out Taiwan to the US," the DPP authorities are turning Taiwan into a "dumping ground" for US farm produce, dealing a heavy blow to the island's agricultural and fishery sectors, he added.
