A Chinese mainland spokesman on Monday expressed deep concern for Taiwan after Typhoon Danas swept through the island's southern region, causing deaths and property damage.

Chen Binhua, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said mainland authorities mourned the "unfortunate loss of Taiwan compatriots" and offered condolences to victims' families and the injured. He also expressed hope for a swift return to normal life and production for those affected.

Typhoon Danas made landfall in Taiwan late Sunday night and moved out to sea early Monday. Taiwan media reported two people died and 334 were injured.

Local authorities said the typhoon caused power outages for more than 660,000 households and led to class and work suspensions in over 10 counties and cities.
