DAMASCUS -- A loud explosion was heard across the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday evening, particularly in the western Mazzeh neighborhood, prompting concern among residents already on edge following a deadly church attack on Sunday.

According to Syria's state news agency SANA, the sound resulted from the controlled detonation of war remnants by authorities on the outskirts of the capital.

The explosion sparked anxiety in Damascus, where tension remains high after a suicide bombing at Mar Elias Church killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens more.
