The China Marrow Donor Program, a nonprofit organization that manages the registry for potential bone marrow and stem cell donors, said on Tuesday that it registered its 20,000th stem cell donation recently.

The 20,000th donor is Wang Juntao, a 22-year-old college student from Yueyang, Hunan province, who registered as a donor in the summer of 2021 and was informed of his match with a patient in February.

On May 5, he completed the donation procedure at a local hospital. "I can potentially save another person's life with a few days' efforts. It is totally worth it," he said during an event held in Yueyang on Tuesday evening.

According to the organization that is administered by the Red Cross Society of China, the registry now contains more than 3.6 million registered donors and is the world's fourth largest and Asia's largest databank.

Among the 20,000 donations, 400 were given to patients from overseas, it added.
