The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee met on Friday to discuss the draft government work report to be submitted by the State Council to the annual session of the nation's top legislature for deliberation next week.

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, presided over the meeting.

The annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, is scheduled to open on Wednesday.

It was noted at the meeting that China has accomplished its major targets in economic and social development in the past year. The nation's gross domestic product expanded 5 percent year-on-year in 2024, official data showed, which was in line with the country's preset target last year.

The country has made steady progress in pursuing high-quality development, maintained overall social stability and taken solid steps in advancing Chinese modernization, the meeting's participants said.

As this year marks the final year for the realization of the goals and tasks of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), they said that it is necessary to adhere to the general principle of pursuing progress while ensuring stability for the government to deliver in 2025.

It was noted that deepening reform across the board should be furthered, high-standard opening up expanded and the development of a modernized industrial system accelerated.

The meeting's participants called for implementing more proactive and effective macro policies, boosting domestic demand and promoting integrated advancements in technological and industrial innovation.

They also stressed the need to stabilize the real estate and stock markets, prevent and defuse risks in key areas and external shocks, stabilize expectations and boost economic vitality in order to ensure a steady economic recovery, improve people's living standards and maintain social harmony and stability.

The objectives and tasks set forth in the 14th Five-Year Plan should be achieved with high quality to lay solid foundations for a good start to the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period, according to the meeting.
