Fudan University launches research center for astronomy, astrophysics
Fudan University has established a research center for astronomy and astrophysics aimed at fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration to advance the frontiers of knowledge in the field of astronomy.
Yuan Feng, a distinguished figure in the realm of astronomy in China, has been appointed as the director of the Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, which was unveiled on Oct 13. Emphasizing the pivotal role that astronomy plays in shaping national disciplines, Yuan highlighted its historical significance as a driving force behind the development of fundamental scientific domains.
Internationally, astronomy holds a position of high esteem, particularly in advanced nations, where it serves as the barometer of a country's scientific and technological prowess through its innovative endeavors. Despite this global recognition, the number of astronomy researchers in China remains relatively modest, Yuan said. In response to the imperative to fortify the foundation of basic scientific disciplines, Fudan University has filled a crucial gap by establishing a dedicated research center for astronomy, completing the suite of six fundamental disciplines encompassing mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, biology and now astronomy.
Yuan outlined the center's ambitious vision to assemble a top-tier research team comprising eight to 10 exceptional individuals within the span of two to three years. This elite group will spearhead cutting-edge research initiatives and contribute significantly to the advancement of astronomy and astrophysics.
In a testament to its commitment to nurturing future talents, the Physics Department at Fudan University has extended its support to the center by providing a pool of high-caliber undergraduate students. Already, 35 undergraduate students have joined various research groups within the center.
Looking ahead, Yuan expressed optimism about the center's potential to infuse fresh energy into the realms of physics and allied disciplines, fostering a culture of innovation and paving the way for collaborative ventures across diverse fields.
