Representatives from five continents praised Shanghai's rapid development and China's modernization drive, underscoring the international community's keen interest in closer cooperation with the country.

They made the remarks during their visit to Shanghai from Sept 1 to 2, ahead of the 2024 Legislators Forum for Friendly Exchanges, expressing optimism about China's prospects in modernization and the willingness to collaborate for common development.

"It's my first time in China, and I'm truly amazed by what the country has achieved, and the exemplary role Shanghai plays for China and the rest of the world," said Ricardo Carvalho, deputy secretary-general of Portugal's Social Democratic Party and member of parliament.

"I'm very excited to be here and amazed at what I've seen and experienced. I didn't expect such a vibrant city," Carvalho added. During their visit, the delegates toured manufacturing facilities for airplanes, ships, and cars. "It was a very good experience, and I now have a totally different perception of Shanghai and Beijing," he added.

Carvalho underscored the importance for European nations to understand China's development projects that could open opportunities for multinational corporations. "It's crucial to have a full idea of what China is capable of and what we can benefit from the knowledge and experience of the Chinese economy," he stated.

For Sherry Rehman, a Pakistani senator and vice-president of the Pakistan Peoples Party, "Every time I come to Shanghai, there is something new and eye-opening. It's never the same journey."

Rehman was impressed to learn the history of the Communist Party of China after visiting the Memorial Hall of the First CPC National Congress. "Today's exhibit has been an outstanding experience. Not only is it beautifully curated, but the story that is told is very moving," she said.

"It engages all viewers in understanding the different journeys China has been through — its struggles, achievements and milestones. All of them are part of real global power, providing a new template for countries seeking hope in regeneration and innovation," Rehman added.

"What is so outstanding is that the country keeps adapting to the future and never remains static," she noted.
