Persistent rain ends dry season at Poyang

The water level of China's largest freshwater lake, Poyang, in the eastern province of Jiangxi, has risen rapidly in recent days due to persistent rain. The water level at the lake's landmark Xingzi hydrological station reached 12.01 meters on Thursday, marking the end of the lake's dry season. By 8 am Sunday, the water level at the station had risen to 14.24 meters. As the water level of Poyang continues to rise, the navigation capacity of the lake's waterway has also improved. By 9 pm Saturday, the water area of the lake exceeded 2,000 square kilometers, while just over two weeks ago it was less than 1,000 sq km.

8 still missing after boat, ship collide

Eight people are still missing following a collision between their fishing boat and a Panamanian container ship off the southwestern coast of South China's Hainan province on Wednesday that caused the fishing boat to sink, the provincial maritime search and rescue center said on Sunday. Thanks to ongoing search and rescue efforts aided by advanced technologies such as underwater robots and remotely operated submersibles, the location of the sunken fishing boat was determined on Saturday. However, due to the rapid flow of water at the site and the presence of fishing nets around the boat, divers have not been able to enter the cabin. As of 5 pm on Saturday, rescue boats, airplanes and rescue personnel had been dispatched to search for the missing people in an area exceeding 19,500 square kilometers. The fishing boat Yuenan Aoyu 36062 collided with SITC DANANG at around midnight Wednesday, 40.7 km southwest of Yinggehai town, Ledong county.
