LONDON -- Vaughan Gething is set to become Wales's new first minister after winning the Labour leadership race there, British media reported Saturday.
The economy minister is expected to be confirmed as Wales's first minister next week in the Senedd, the Welsh parliament. He will succeed Mark Drakeford, who announced his intention to quit in December after five years in the role.
The result was announced in a lecture hall at Cardiff University, after Gething beat his only rival, education minister Jeremy Miles.
Gething said in his acceptance speech that he wanted to "use this moment as a starting point for a more confident march into the future."
