Airports in the Xizang autonomous region received approximately 6.89 million visits in 2023, a year-on-year increase of almost 106 percent, according to data released by the Xizang branch of the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

According to the administration's recent annual work and aviation safety work conference, significant achievements were made in aviation in 2023, with substantial increases in flight operations, cargo throughput, and passenger numbers across the region's airports.

In 2023, 60,700 flights took off and landed in the region, carrying 47,000 metric tons of freight and mail, marking a rise of 63.2 percent and 45.1 percent year-on-year, respectively.

The region's Lhasa Gonggar Airport and Nyingzhi Mainling Airport achieved historic milestones, surpassing 5 million and 600,000 passenger visits, respectively.

The administration's efforts to enhance the route network structure were particularly emphasized throughout the year, featuring the completion of the region's transportation airport route network. The developments included the gradual formation of a route network structure, resumption of more direct flights, and opening of new routes.

In 2024, the administration's ambitious plans underscore its determination to achieve high-level safety assurance and foster high-quality development, setting the stage for a new chapter in civil aviation in Xizang.

The 2023 achievements and the vision outlined for 2024 demonstrate the remarkable growth and expansion of the administration, underlining its pivotal role in advancing the region's aviation industry and connectivity.
