Former Guangdong legislator put on trial
Li Chunsheng, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, stood trial on Thursday for taking bribes at the Intermediate People's Court of Chenzhou in Hunan province. Li is accused of taking advantage of his posts in the provinces of Henan and Guangdong to seek benefits for others in matters such as project contracting and job promotion. In return, he illegally accepted money and valuables worth over 79.4 million yuan ($11.2 million), according to prosecutors. Li pleaded guilty and expressed remorse. He will be sentenced at a later date.
Cold wave sweeps across North China
China's meteorological authorities renewed a yellow alert for cold weather on Thursday morning, forecasting sharp drops in temperature and gales in some parts of the country. From Wednesday to Friday, temperatures are expected to drop by 12 to 16 C in parts of North China, including Beijing, Hebei and Inner Mongolia, and in Northeast China, according to the National Meteorological Center.
