Tianjin curbs risky diving

Local authorities in Tianjin have implemented stricter patrolling and persuasion measures to curb the growing trend of diving off the Shizilin Bridge.

The bridge, known for its iconic lion statues on the guardrails, has become a popular tourist attraction both online and offline, drawing in senior citizens who partake in spontaneous diving events. This has captivated numerous spectators in recent weeks.

To ensure the safety of those visiting the site, local police stations have increased patrols along the Haihe River, where the bridge is located, according to the Guangfudao Street Administrative Office in Hebei district, the eastern area of the bridge.

Additionally, dedicated volunteers are actively advocating against the potential dangers associated with diving off the bridge. Their presence serves as a deterrent to prevent individuals from engaging in risky behavior.

The slogans against diving and swimming have been pasted along the bank, while the tourists and residents continue to appeal against the activity.

Adding to the international appeals of the bridge, Russian and African students have also joined in on the diving activities since last week.

A retired volunteer from a railway company surnamed Sun, has gained considerable online attention for his efforts in dissuading a Russian student from diving off the bridge.

In another notable instance, a hesitant Russian student overcame her fears and took the plunge with the encouragement of a seasoned 60-year-old local diving enthusiast surnamed Luo.

What adds to the intrigue is the apparent satirical renaming of the bridge as the "8A scenic tour spot" by some social media users.

This tongue-in-cheek remark humorously suggests that the popularity of the bridge has even surpassed the highest possible rating of 5A, typically reserved for the most prestigious tourist attractions across the country.

The bridge is six meters over the river, according to the WeChat social account of Hebei district and the death tolls due to illegal swimming and diving around the bridge were reported in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015, according to Jinyun, a local news app.
