President's bilateral meetings underscore deep collaboration

Republic of Congo

President Xi Jinping and the Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso agreed to further enhance bilateral ties as their diplomatic relationship will celebrate its 60th anniversary next year.
Calling Sassou Nguesso an old friend and good friend of the Chinese people, Xi said ties between the two countries have developed very well, a result that is closely linked to the fact that Sassou Nguesso has attached high importance to and insisted on adopting a friendly approach toward China.
Xi thanked the Republic of Congo for firmly supporting China on issues concerning its core interests, and said China will, as it has done in the past, firmly support the African country's efforts to safeguard its independence, oppose foreign interference and play a bigger role in international and regional affairs.
As next year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, China hopes to work with the Republic of Congo to plan a grand celebration, Xi said.
China also hopes to maintain close exchanges with the Republic of Congo, strengthen political mutual trust and deepen pragmatic cooperation, so that their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership will yield more outcomes, Xi said.
For his part, Sassou Nguesso said he remembers vividly when Xi paid a successful state visit to the country in 2013.
Friendship and cooperation with China is an important reason for the continuous growth of the Republic of Congo, Sassou Nguesso said, pointing out that Chinese companies have undertaken many construction projects in his country.
The Republic of Congo will deepen its exchanges and coordination with China over international affairs to jointly safeguard the interests of developing countries, Sassou Nguesso said.
