7-month-old baby drowns in bathtub after mother suffers epileptic attack

A 7-month-old baby in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, drowned in a bathtub after his mother suffered a sudden epileptic attack while giving him a bath, the Shenzhen Emergency Medical Center said on Monday.
The mother, who has not been identified, was home alone with the baby on Aug 10 when the attack occurred. She lost consciousness and fell to the ground, leaving the baby unattended in the bathtub.
The mother regained consciousness 15 minutes later and found the baby soaked in water and unresponsive. She called emergency services and began CPR while waiting for help to arrive.
An ambulance arrived at the scene 14 minutes later and rushed the baby to the Shenzhen Children's Hospital. However, the baby was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Shenzhen Emergency Medical Center said that there are about 80 calls regarding epilepsy per month in the city. The center called for greater awareness of the disease and urged people to seek medical attention if they experience a seizure.
The center also said that bystanders should stay calm and be patient if they witness someone having an epileptic seizure. They should not shake or yell at the person, and they should make sure the person is away from anything that could cause injury. Bystanders should also help the person get comfortable and make sure they can breathe easily.
