China's first megaton high-pressure carbon dioxide transmission pipeline was put into operation on Tuesday, a significant milestone in China's large-scale development of the carbon capture, utilization and storage industrial chain, said operator China Petrochemical Corp, also known as Sinopec.

The 109-kilometer pipeline transports carbon dioxide captured from Sinopec's Qilu refinery in Shandong province to its Shengli oilfield for further displacement, storage and well stimulation.

The project will reduce carbon emissions by 1 million tons per year, the equivalent of planting nearly 9 million trees and shutting down 600,000 economy cars.
