China's top political advisory body to open annual session on Sat

The 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference will open its first session on Saturday at 3 pm at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, a spokesman said Friday.
The session will end on March 11 after running for seven-and-a-half-day, said Guo Weimin, the spokesman for the session, at a news conference on Friday in Beijing.
About 2,100 members will gather in Beijing to begin their five-year term as national political advisers. They will discuss various topics of people's concerns and submit their proposals to the conference.
The session will select the standing committee members of the 14th CPPCC National Committee and its chairpersons and other leaders, according to Guo.
The session will also review the amendments of the constitution of the CPPCC, he said.
As an important organ for multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the Party's leadership, the CPPCC members serve as advisers for government, legislative and judicial organs, and put forward proposals on major political and social issues.
