Doctors from First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, successfully completed a robot-assisted total knee replacement surgery over the weekend.

The surgery, a first for the hospital, was done by Sheng Puyi, director of the hospital's orthopedics and microsurgery department and his team on Saturday.

The patient is a 68 year-old woman who suffered severe knee osteoarthritis in both knees. The disease has seriously affected her daily life and ability to exercise. It has also placed heavy mental and economic burdens on her and her family, the hospital said.

After evaluation and analysis of the patient, Sheng and his team performed robot-assisted knee replacement surgery for accuracy, rapid recovery and improved quality of life for the patient.

An X-ray examination after the surgery showed that the prosthesis was in a good position, it said.
