Florida shooter gets life behind bars
The perpetrator of the 2018 Parkland school shooting, one of the deadliest school shootings in US history, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Wednesday. Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer sentenced Nikolas Cruz to 34 life terms for killing 17 people and injuring 17 others in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Cruz, 24, was ordered to be transferred to the custody of the Florida Department of Corrections.

Arab League calls for action on challenges
The 31st Arab League Summit concluded on Wednesday with the adoption of the Algiers Declaration, which calls for joint action to tackle regional and global challenges. The declaration warned of the risks brought by the changing international situation to Arab national security and stability, stressing the importance of unifying efforts to preserve common Arab interests. It also called for cooperation in ensuring food and energy security, confronting climate change, as well as ending crises in some Arab countries.

Hottest October logged since 1945
Last month was the hottest October in France since 1945, with an average temperature of 17.2 C, Meteo-France said on Wednesday. The average temperature this October was about 3.5 C higher than normal across the country, it said.
