Over 6,000 residents relocated after dyke breach in China's Liaoning

SHENYANG -- A total of 6,393 local residents were relocated after a swollen river burst its dyke in Northeast China's Liaoning province on Monday, local authorities said Tuesday.

The Raoyang River in Panjin City saw two rounds of rainstorms hit the area in July, according to the city's publicity department. The flood was the most severe ever recorded, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

The dyke breach occurred at 10:30 am, Monday. The city's flood control headquarters initiated the level-I emergency flood control response and sent 2,680 rescuers and 320 engineering and transport vehicles to the site. Flood-fighting materials such as sandbags and timber piles were also allocated to the site.

As of 7 pm, a total of 6,393 local residents had been safely relocated. No casualties have been reported.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing.
