Vice-President Wang Qishan on Monday called on China and Brazil to have close communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, to strengthen coordination within the framework of multilateral mechanisms, and to safeguard and promote the common interests of emerging markets and developing countries.

He made the remarks when co-hosting the sixth session of the China-Brazil High-level Coordination and Cooperation Committee via video link with Hamilton Mourao, vice-president of Brazil.

Under the right guidance of the leaders of the two countries, Wang said, China and Brazil have accommodated one another's fundamental and long-term interests and responded to global challenges in recent years in solidarity, which has written a new chapter of cooperation between emerging economies.

According to Wang, China has been Brazil's largest trading partner for 13 consecutive years, while Brazil is China's largest investment destination in Latin America. Bilateral trade has exceeded $100 billion for four consecutive years.

Wang said the two countries have jointly coped with the pandemic, and carry out close exchanges in the fields of science and technology, cultural and people-to-people exchanges and sports, which have all contributed to enhancing friendship between the two peoples.

As the world has entered into a new period of turbulence, Wang said that China and Brazil, being major countries with global influence, should always grasp the right direction of history.

As the two countries' heads of state would attend the BRICS Leaders' meeting held in June, Wang stressed the need for the two sides to implement the results of the meeting so as to prepare for the leaders' meeting, and to strive to promote prosperous, green and balanced development of the two countries and the world at large.

Noting that Brazil and China respect each other and enjoy a profound traditional friendship, Mourao said Brazil attaches great importance to the comprehensive strategic partnership with China.

In a world fraught with uncertainties, he said Brazil is willing to strengthen cooperation with China under multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the BRICS group, and the G20, to contribute to world peace and prosperity.

Mourao welcomed Chinese enterprises to scale up investment in Brazil and hoped that the country could increase product exports to China.

He also expressed his readiness to work with China to tackle common challenges such as food security, and tap new opportunities for energy transition and low-carbon economy.

The China-Brazil High-level Coordination and Cooperation Committee is the highest-level dialogue and cooperation mechanism between the two governments.

The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on comprehensively deepening practical cooperation in various fields, and the meeting achieved fruitful results.
