Phase one of the Gas Natural Acu gas-fired power plant entered commercial operations on Friday, according to its operator State Power Investment Corporation.

With GNA I entering commercial operation, SPIC's controllable capacity in Brazil reached 2.21 Gigawatts, with a more balanced and risk-resilient portfolio in hydro, gas and wind assets.

Located at Porto do Acu in Rio de Janeiro, the GNA project includes a thermoelectric plant, a liquefied natural gas terminal, as well as a substation and a 48-kilometer transmission line.

The total planned capacity of GNA is 6.4 GW, which will be completed in four phases.

The project is jointly developed by SPIC, Siemens Energy, BP and Prumo Logistics, a Brazil-based company controlled by EIG. SPIC is the second largest shareholder with 33 percent equity.

With $1 billion of investment and 1,338 MW of installed capacity, GNA I will be able to supply energy for 6 million households.
