Ex-power executive arrested for graft
The People's Procuratorate of Hebei province has ordered the arrest of Xie Changjun, former deputy general manager of major power producer China Guodian Corporation, for suspected bribe-taking, abuse of power, and taking advantage of his position to seek benefits for others. Xie's case was transferred to the procuratorial authorities for review and prosecution following the conclusion of an investigation by the National Supervisory Commission, China's Supreme People's Procuratorate said in a statement on Wednesday.
US warship warned off from Chinese waters
The Chinese military sent air and naval forces to monitor and then warn off a United States Navy warship from waters near Meiji Reef in the South China Sea on Wednesday, a People's Liberation Army spokesman said. Senior Colonel Tian Junli, spokesman for the PLA Southern Theater Command, said the USS Benfold trespassed in waters near the reef on Wednesday without permission from the Chinese government. The PLA Southern Theater Command mobilized its aircraft and ships to follow and expel the intruding vessel.
Asian Youth Games postponed to 2022
The 2021 Asian Youth Games will be postponed until December next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese Olympic Committee said on Wednesday. The 3rd Asian Youth Games were originally scheduled to be held in Shantou, Guangdong province, from Nov 20-28 this year. They will now be held from Dec 20-28 next year, the COC said in a statement. The Olympic Council of Asia, the COC and the local organizing committee jointly made the decision, it said.
