Young lawmakers from China and Cambodia exchanged views via video link on Monday to deepen mutual understanding and bring new energy to bilateral relations and cooperation between their legislative bodies.

Describing the two countries as ironclad friends and a community with a shared future, Wang Hongyan, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, called for giving full play to the role of legislators in carrying forward the traditional friendship between the two sides, promoting mutually beneficial cooperation and helping to boost the development of bilateral ties.

Hun Many, chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly's Commission for Education, Youth, Religious Affairs, Culture and Tourism, said the online activity would benefit the people of the two nations and enhance exchanges and cooperation between the legislative bodies.

Legislators from the two sides shared ideas and suggestions on topics such as increasing cooperation and bilateral relations amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, alleviating economic and social impacts caused by the pandemic and helping strengthen the building of rule of law. It was the first exchange via video link between young legislators from the two countries since the pandemic began in late 2019.

The NPC has maintained close exchanges with Cambodian lawmakers for a long time, viewing such communication as a key part of the two countries' comprehensive strategic partnership.

In January, when delivering a video speech at the opening ceremony for exchange activities between the NPC and the National Assembly, Li Zhanshu, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, highlighted the important role of the two legislatures in helping to promote the development of bilateral ties.

He said the two nations have firmly supported each other on issues concerning their core interests, adding China will continue to firmly support the Cambodian people's just cause and Cambodia's choice of development path, and offer Cambodia what aid it can.
